What to Wear on a Road Trip

It’s road trip season!

Whether you’re cruising along Route 66, through the Great Smoky Mountains, or down the Florida coast, the open road awaits you.

Road trips are all about seeing the world through new eyes, taking a detour off the beaten path, and letting adventure be your guide.

To get the most out of your road trip experience, you want to feel flexible and happy to go with the flow. For that, you’ll need the right clothes.

Read on for our tips on what to wear on a road trip.

Rule of the road: comfy yet cute

What’s the #1 thing to keep in mind when dressing for a road trip? Your comfort.

Why? You’re going to be sitting around, a lot. So, you want to be able to relax. We love something that you can stretch out in when you reach the next rest stop or gas stations. Good options include rompers, the classic graphic tee paired with jeans, and even athleisure.

Just don’t wear anything with weird back straps because it hurts when you're sitting (you know what we’re talking about).

If you’re road tripping during the winter, swap out the graphic tee for a stylish sweater or sweatshirt. Pack your favorite beanie, scarf, and winter coat to pop on whenever you get out of the car.

The key is striking that balance of comfy yet cute. Trust us — you’re going to want to pull over and take photos for Instagram!

Consider your destination

A successful road trip requires good planning. The same goes for your outfits!

We recommend putting together your outfits based on where you plan on stopping.

If you're going somewhere hot, opt for shorts over jeans. Stopping for a swim? Wear your bathing suit under your outfit. Plan on going for a short hike or a walk around the town square? Wear comfortable sneakers.

Prepare for a chilly car

Getting the temperature right on a road trip is tricky. You may have the A/C on full blast, but if that sun’s beating down on you, the car will still feel warm.

The solution? Layers! Pack a blanket or a light cardigan — especially if you're not the one in control of the AC. This way you can cover up when it feels like the arctic, and avoid sweating when you’re driving through a hot patch.

Jean jackets are also a good option because they pair well with most summer road trip outfits, but they’re not so insulated that they’ll make you sweat.

Don’t judge us but… we also recommend a few pairs of socks. Some cars have air vents down on the floor, and you don’t want your little toes to freeze! Plus, it feels great to take your shoes off and let your feet breathe a little. Just bring some foot lotion in case they got a bit stinky!

Pack your accessories

Speaking of socks, what other travel accessories do you need?

A hat, whether it’s a beanie or a floppy summer hat, adds a bit of chic to any Instagram shot, while keeping your face safe from the UV rays. Hat or not, you’ll also want to bring your sunglasses to enjoy the views.

If you’re traveling with a group, consider bringing along your own headphones and music. It’s obviously more fun to listen to music together and sing like you’re putting together the next girl group, but sometimes you need a moment of zen. Feel free to dive into your own music and take a break!

Finally, don’t forget your travel jewelry organizer! The Wanderer has enough space to double as a makeshift wallet, and it’s the perfect place to store your jewelry while you take an impromptu dip!
